Personal Counseling Services Receives $1.5 Million Grant for Expansion

In an exciting development for mental health services in southern Indiana, Personal Counseling Services (PCS) has received a preliminary matching grant commitment of up to $1.5 million from Indiana United Ways .in conjunction with Metro United Way, which has supported Personal Counseling Services’ efforts regarding mental health for more than three decades. This grant will enable PCS to construct a 10,667-square-foot facility on its campus in Clarksville, Indiana, significantly expanding its capacity to provide mental health services to the community. We are thrilled and honored that Indiana United Way and Metro United Way recognizes the impact that Personal Counseling Services has on mental health in the region.

The expansion comes at a critical time, as recent reports highlight the pressing need for mental health support in the region. According to US News & World Report’s Healthiest Communities dashboard, 17% of adults in Clark County report frequent mental distress. Additionally, the Priorities for Progress report from the Community Foundation for Southern Indiana identifies substance abuse and mental illness as top concerns among residents.

Currently, PCS receives 331 monthly referrals from 17 counties in southern Indiana but can only accommodate about 33 individuals and families. The new facility will dramatically increase PCS’s capacity, serving 250 individuals and families weekly.

The expanded facility will feature:

  • Private spaces for ten new clinicians
  • A psychiatric nurse
  • Five interns connected to local universities
  • A room for intensive outpatient group therapy

This increased capacity will help address the area’s significant gap in mental health services, reducing wait times and improving access to care.

The grant from Indiana United Ways is part of a matching initiative, requiring PCS to raise an additional $1.5 million by the end of 2025. Please see the attached Press Release for additional details.
